There's something about the low poly, unrefined look of the games that just strikes me the right way. It was also the only time I could say I supported Sony. The PS1 was when I loved gaming the most. Say you decapitated an enemy's head, some would continue to walk around in a daze, attacking you haphazardly because they couldn't see shit! Same with enemy legs, some would limp on the floor, crawling towards you attempting to take you out even though they couldn't walk anymore. The best thing about Abyss was that you could slice off enemy parts. It was completely playable, despite missing out on some confusing text and descriptions here and there. Since there is like NO ONE to talk to in these games you can get through the Japanese version without too many hitches. The controls were tighter, areas were more coherent & detailed. STA was pretty much what we wanted from the original.

We did end up importing copies of Shadow Tower Abyss though and we modded a PS2 to play it.

My brother and I were huge King's Field/From Software fans since we were exposed to these games, and trust me, back in the PS2 days we were mega-pissed off. SCEA said "fuck no" to Agetec for god knows what reason, and we never got it. Apparently, Agetec had everything done and ready besides the box art, if I remember the whole situation clearly. Yeah, don't even get me started on that bullshit.
